As an Australian I am especially fascinated by African wildlife for which there are no Australian equivalents–particularly tortoises and mongooses. On a trip some months ago to the Helderberg Nature Reserve I came across a young Small Grey Mongoose Herpestes pulverulentus. It was very obliging and quite photogenic. This is the closest a mongoose has ever allowed me to get.
